Does this quote mean anything more than what it says in text to anybody other than myself?

Well to me he's either taking about the game of chess or about how Jane treated the men in her life always keeping them in the back row so they wudn't get too close. I guess the author is trying to be sneaky. But that's just my opinion, maybe i'm going too deep idk for sure tho cuz i never read the book.
