How can Karzai stand for Afghan election on his own ?

His opponent has stood down because of blatant corruption and vote rigging so Karzai is to continue with the election. Hilary Clinton has said she she sees no problem with this. If this guy is to be the US puppet and a shoe in, why should British troops put their lives on the line defending polling stations when the result is a foregone conclusion ?
