What is done for a furnace burner that won't ignite?

My husband has called someone about this but so far no return call as of yet. What can be done or needs to be done so that the furnace burner will ignite? The hot water heater was replaced about a year ago. I don't understand hot weater heaters or burners. Just looking for some istance for my husband.
